Comma and Zero

In Indonesian the comma that is used in English to signify thousands is replaced by a dot. There are two words for “zero”: nol and kosong, both about equally commonly used.

Number

The word nomor functions as a kind of “marker word” or “prefix” that appears in front of the citation of a number. When you are saying addresses out loud, the word nomor is usually (but not always) inserted in front of the number, especially numbers less than twenty.

Dimana rumah Anda? – Where do you live?
Rumah saya di Jalan Aru nomor 16. – My house is at number 16 Aru Street.

Date

When you say the date (that is the number that corresponds with a day of the month followed by the name of the month, and sometimes followed by the year as well), the date is usually preceded by the marker word tanggal (pronounced a bit like “tonguegull”).

tanggal dua puluh lima – the 25th.

If you also mention the name of the month as part of the date, the marker word bulan is usually dropped from in front of the name of the month. Thus:

tanggal tiga Mei
 – the third of May
tanggal enam belas Juli – the 16th of July
