About Us

Bahasa Kita was founded by Wieke Gur in 2006. She is an intercultural leadership coach, a marketing communication specialist who is passionate about Indonesian language and culture and a well-known Indonesian songwriter.

The role of the following Indonesian experts and linguists in the early stage are what makes Bahasa Kita today:

Dr. Uli Kozok,Professor at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, Department of Indo-Pacific Languages and Literatures

Honorary Professor Dr. George Quinn who was Head of the Southeast Asia Centre in (what was then known as) the Faculty of Asian Studies, College of Asia and the Pacific at the Australian National University in Canberra.

Dr. Tim Hassall who has a PhD in Applied Linguistics, an MA in TESOL, and a Graduate Diploma in Secondary Education. He coordinates and teaches courses on Indonesian language and aspects of Indonesian linguistics at the Australian National University, Canberra.

Iem Brown was an Adjunct Research Fellow at the Faculty of Humanities, Curtin University. Her books are The Territories of Indonesia(Europa Territories of the World Series), and Contemporary Indonesian Buddhism and Monotheism.

Dr. Dorodjatun Kuntjoro-Jakti, Coordination Minister for the Economy and Finance in Indonesia (2001-2004),  Indonesia’s Ambassador Plenipotentiary and Extraordinary to the United States (1998-2001). He is not only an economist but also a language watchdog.

Dr. James Neil Sneddon who was Associate Professor in the School of Languages and Linguistics at Griffith University. He obtained his PhD in Linguistics in 1974 at the Australian National University. His thesis topic was “Tondano Phonology and Grammar”.

Dr. Nikolaos van Dam, a Middle East scholar, former Dutch Ambassador to Iraq, Egypt, and Indonesia, and author. He studied Arabic and Indonesian language and literature at Leiden University in the Netherlands.

Bahasa Kita has now become the most comprehensive Indonesian language online resource. Many Indonesian language teachers and students learning Indonesian from around the world use the site as reference. The site has also displayed the importance of understanding the Indonesian culture while learning the language.
