Batik

Batik is Indonesian traditional cloth which uses the hand written and dyeing technique. Motifs of flowers, twinning plants, leaves buds, flowers, birds, butterflies, fish, insects and geometric forms are rich in symbolic association and variety; there are about three thousand recorded batik patterns. It is a cultural icon and part of Indonesia’s cultural heritage.

On 2 October 2009, UNESCO has officially recognized batik as one of the Intangible Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding and the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
