The prefix ber- that is attached to the following root words makes them intransitive verbs. When prefix me- and suffix -kan is added simultaneously as confix, not only the meaning changes, but the verb becomes transitive verb, and the prefix ber- stays.
For example:
Root: henti – stop
- Base word with prefix ber- → ber + henti → berhenti – to stop (intransitive verb)
- In a sentence: Mobil saya berhenti.
- Meaning: My car stops.
You can add adverb to the intransitive verb berhenti.
- Mobil saya berhenti di depan rumah.
- Meaning: My car stops in front of the house.
Add confix (prefix me- and suffix -kan )→ memberhentikan – to dismiss, to sack
- Saya memberhentikan karyawan saya.
- Meaning: I sack my employee.
Root: angkat – lift
- Base word with prefix ber- → ber + angkat → berangkat – to depart (intransitive verb)
- In a sentence: Dia sudah berangkat.
- Meaning: He/she has departed.
You can add adverb to the intransitive verb berangkat.
- In a sentence: Dia sudah berangkat ke kantor
- Meaning: He/she has departed/left for the office.
Add confix (prefix me- and suffix -kan ) → memberangkatkan – to dispatch
- Kepala stasiun akan segera memberangkatkan kereta jurusan Bogor.
- Meaning: the stationmaster will immediately dispatch a train to Bogor
Root: laku – behaviour, attitude
- Base word with prefix ber- prefix ber- → ber + laku → berlaku – apply, be in effect (intransitive verb)
- In a sentence: Kartu kredit ini sudah tidak berlaku.
- Meaning: This credit card has expired.
You can add adverb to the intransitive verb berlaku.
- In a sentence: Kartu kredit ini berlaku sampai tahun 2023.
- Meaning: This credit card is valid till 2023.
Add confix (prefix me- and suffix -kan ) → memberlakukan – to apply, to put into effect.
- Imigrasi Indonesia saat ini memberlakukan pembatasan masuk bagi Orang Asing.
- Meaning: Indonesian Immigration currently imposes entry restrictions for Foreigners.
