Prefix ‘per’ is usually accompanied by prefix ‘me-‘ before it to facilitate a smooth transition in for active form and prefix di- for passive form. One of the functions of this per- is to make verb than ‘means to make it more’.
To make it more
In this context, words that formed by affix per- is usually used in oral conversation. One of the functions of this per- is to make verb than ‘means to make it more’, derived from root words that classified as adjective.
- kecil (Adjective) – small
- per + kecil = perkecil (v) – to make … smaller/ zoom out
- (1) Kita harus perkecil foto ini (We need to decrease the size of this photo/picture)
- (2) Tolong perkecil foto ini (Decrease the size of this picture please)
In formal Indonesian (1), we could add another prefix before ‘the per + root word’ word (perkecil). For active sentence, you could add prefix me-(N), while prefix di- is used to form verb for passive sentence.
Examples:
- Kita harus memperkecil foto ini (We need to decrease the size of this photo/picture)
- Foto ini harus diperkecil (The size of this photo/picture must be decreased)
